Nuvei and Loop Global are targeting Canada's EV payment reliability gap, deploying ruggedized WizarPOS terminals at public charging stations nationwide
21 Sep 2025

Nuvei and Loop Global are deepening their Canadian partnership to address one of public electric vehicle charging's most stubborn operational failures: payments that don't work. The companies, working alongside hardware provider WizarPOS, are rolling out unattended payment terminals at commercial properties, workplaces and municipalities across Canada, aiming to make the transaction experience at public chargers as routine as a convenience store checkout.
Payment reliability has quietly become a defining factor in how drivers evaluate public charging networks, often carrying more weight than charging speed. Frozen screens, declined cards and stalled transactions have generated persistent complaints at stations nationwide. Under the expanded agreement, Nuvei will provide locally based payment processing designed to handle high transaction volumes while meeting Canada's data residency and regulatory requirements; WizarPOS will supply terminals engineered for continuous use in outdoor and high-traffic environments.
The collaboration arrives as governments and automakers are pressing hard on infrastructure targets. Canada has committed to substantial EV adoption benchmarks, and charging networks are increasingly evaluated on operational consistency rather than station count alone. When a payment fails, analysts note, driver frustration typically lands on the charger brand regardless of where the technical breakdown occurred.
Yet the initiative faces real constraints. Hardware upgrades require capital that many operators are still weighing against expansion costs. Canada's compliance environment adds layers of complexity that simpler markets avoid. Critics also point out that smoother payments cannot resolve disconnected bottlenecks, among them permitting backlogs and grid interconnection delays, which continue to slow deployment in several provinces.
Still, most industry observers treat reliable payment processing as a baseline requirement rather than a differentiator. If the Nuvei-Loop Global deployment performs as intended, it could open space for more sophisticated commercial models: dynamic pricing, itemized billing and data tools for site operators. Whether that potential translates into broader market gains will depend on how quickly the companies can scale across a geographically sprawling and climatically demanding country.
